Adele Sande – Oran Mor
The iRefix team were in attendance at The Oran Mor, Glasgow which played host to Adele Sande's EP launch party. For those that are not familiar with Adele she is a rising soul sensation from Scotland recently signed to Souljawn records, a local independent label based in Glasgow. The Oran Mor seemed like the perfect venue for an event of this nature being quite spacious with a relaxed atmosphere. When the host DJ David Craig introduced Adele to the stage this somewhat spacious venue was at full capacity with supporters eagerly waiting to see what Adele had to offer. Those that had previously seen Adele perform live knew they were in for a fantastic night of live music and those not familiar with Adele were soon made to sit up and take notice of this phenomenal talent.
Adele, supported by a full band opened with "A Woman's Touch", a perfect starting track that set the tone for the rest of the performance. Adele then went to her piano to perform another track taken from her EP called "Patch Work". Next was a uniquely performed cover of the late Wu Tang Clan member ODB called "Got Your Money". This was a track that those familiar with Adele's music were eagerly anticipating and were certainly not left disappointed. The audience certainly appreciated how Adele uniquely approached the delivery of this track. The performance continued with "Best Friend" written about Adele's close relationship with her mother. This more up-tempo track had many heads nodding to its beats and rhythms. "Has Needs", a track relating to the needs of women was performed next and then continued with "Dirty Jeans". At the start of this track Adele surprised the audience with her beat boxing ability. She then invited Glasgow based beat boxer Big Taj to the stage who added scratch sounds and beats to the track. Adele then covered tracks from soul legends Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder. Normally this would be a very dangerous move from such an inexperienced and young performer but such is Adele's talent she pulled each cover off with ease. This was an eye opener for many that we truly do have a phenomenal talent just waiting for the opportunity to showcase her talents to a worldwide audience.
Adele finished her set by performing her most recognised track "Baby's Eyes" followed by a huge Glasgow round of applause. There are not many words to describe how fantastic this performance was from such a young musician and it certainly left many lost for words. Having listened to Adele's fantastic EP titled "Have You Heard?" what you hear on the EP is what you get at the live shows such is the pure clarity of Adele's voice. This is a young artist just waiting for the world to take notice of her incredible musical talent.
For more information on Adele and to purchase her EP titled "Have You Heard?" please visit her official website at http://www.adelesande.com. Which leaves me to say Adele Sande, Have You Heard?

New NERD album already finished??
Pharrell has announced that the new N*E*R*D album is finished and awaitng release.
It appears as though rumours of a split between Pharrell and the group have been quashed as all 3 members of the group, Pharrell, Chad Hugo and Shay Haley return for this album.
The album entitled 'N.3.R.D' is scheduled for release in March/April 2008 and the main topic is 'Pretty Girls'.
I'm sure we can expect the same diverse futuristic styles as heard on 'In Search of...' and 'Fly or Die', with all elements of Hip Hop, Rock, R&B and Funk fused toether. Hopefully we'll see a return to form for Pharrell who seems to have been quiet recently. Keep checking back for more info as it comes!

Janet Jackson reveals new album title
Earlier this week a brand new track by Janet leaked on the internet, The track is called "Feedback" and it was produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. Also this week Janet revealed the name of her first album under the Island/Def Jam group. The album is called "Discipline" and due out in Feb 2008.
When I found out it's due out in Feb I thought does that mean Mariah's going to push her album back? I pretty sure her new album is due to drop around that period. Will it be battle of the Divas? Or you never know they might end up working together! Now that would be something.
Lets wait and see...

Been a good week!
Things have really been hectic for for me this month, but it's been all good. Went to the 1Xtra/Radio 1 Xmas party on Weds night and that was a lot of fun! This year we were in a bowling alley, yep a bowling alley, which to me added a lot to the entertainment, as I'm not really the dancing type.
Gotta big up these peeps though.
Jenna G - The official queen of bowling
Rampage - The official dons of 1Xtra/Radio 1 Xmas party sets
Max - The queen of putting men in their place
And last but not least me the king of stealing peoples go at bowling haha
Last night I touched in the West side of the country - Bristol! Take my advice, if your looking for a hot night out on a Thursday Syndicate nightclub is the place to be. The place is packed wall to wall and the vibes are electric!

New Kelly Rowland video
Is it me or am the only one that thought Kelly's album "Ms Kelly" was slept on?! After the amount of times the label pushed back the release date you would of thought they'd give it a decent push once it finally came out but nope so far in the UK there's been just the one single which has come and gone with no real trace.
Anyway before I carry on moaning, check out the video for the new single "Work" Oh and one last rant, they should of made a video to the remix version with Fat Joe, he smacks it!

Jonny G reviews The Dream's "Love Hate" album
I first took notice of The Dream on Nivea's 2005 album 'Complicated' with his remix of Okay being the stand out track and it's almost criminal that it wasn't a club banger!! 2 years on and he's had 2 number one smashes with writing and production credits on Rhianna's 'Umbrella' and J.Holiday's 'Bed' and right at the end of 2007 his album 'Love Hate' has seemingly come out of nowhere!
The album is 11 tracks long, and while that sounds like a short album, remember Usher's classic 'My Way' album was only 9 tracks and 1 remix!
Most people will straight away recognise The Dream for his anthem 'Shawty is a 10' which is so damn catchy!! If you listen to G Child's show on 1xtra you'll also be humming away to Falsetto, so how does the rest of the album match up to these killer tracks? Quite well actually!
On the whole the album is a very mid tempo, southern drum/snap influenced kind of R&B, which is very club and radio friendly! It's the kinda of album you can nod your head to in the whip, as you're crusin down the motorway and rarely have to hit the 'next track' button. Its got the same kind of appeal as Lloyd's Street love album, so if you liked Street Love I think you'll enjoy this. (note that Street Love is my stand out album of the year)
The album does have its highs and lows though, but there are far more highs than lows. 'Nikki' is my least favourite track from the album, it's still got its catchy parts but on the whole it felt a bit out of place and like there was too much going on at once. 'Nikki' leads into 'She needs my love' which sounds like a fusion of Tim & Bob and Timbaland - its seriously catchy! His style of repeating lines then adding a vocal effect can be seen best on 'Playin in her hair' with classic dream 'eh - eh - eh -eh's' thrown in for effect...I seem to be repeating the word catchy a lot but thats the only way to describe it, although I can understand why some people might find it annoying. 'Purple kisses' sounds very much like 'Bed' but its quite a solid slow jam. 'Ditch that' has quite a funk feel but I didn't understand the need to throw in the 'ella' every now and again, still a head nodder and again sounds very Timbaland, the funk guitar is a great rift though and I could see it doing well in a club set. Love songs is very cool and a slow head nodder. The album finishes with a track called 'Livin a lie' featuring Rhianna which I can see doing well as a single. I'm not really into the track but with Rhianna on the track you can understand how it would shift units.
My biggest gripe with the album though is the way 'Falsetto' is blended into the track before and track after for no real reason. 112 did it on their first album but they blended 'Only you' into an interlude for effect, the only reason I can see for it on this album is to make people buy the single to get a clean version. Very crafty if you ask me! Also you might find the constant repetitions of Eh Eh Eh or Ella Ella Ella annoying - its like marmite I guess, you either love it or hate it.
Is it a classic? Not quite. Is it better that Lloyd's Street Love? No not really. What it is though is a very solid catchy albums with possible single choices throughout. We know 'Shawty is a 10' and 'Falsetto' are sure fire singles but any number of the tracks could be the next hit. On a scale of 1 - 10 I'd give it a solid 8! If you can find it for under a tenner and enjoyed Street Love or found yourself noddin your head to 'Shawty is a 10' or 'Falsetto' pick yourself up a copy!
Eh Eh Eh Eh!!!!

UK Soul Spotlight - Kyra Simone
It seems to be an irregular occurrence to see soul videos on mainstream television never mind seeing a music video from a British soul artist. However the extremely talented Kyra Simone has produced a hidden gem using her song "Lets Jus Be Friends" for her debut video. This unique video accompanied the release of Kyra's debut ep "Soul Searching" which got rave reviews. For more on Kyra Simone check www.myspace.com/kyrasimone.

Mario At London's Jazz Cafe Last Night
Mario is currently in the UK to perform 3 shows at the world famous Jazz Cafe in London, even though I thought that was strange to place to put him I still went along to check him out. Normally I'm fashionably late for these kind of things but on this occasion I was in the venue 45 minutes after the doors opened, greeted by a long DJ set before the opening act - Laura Izibor arrived on stage and performed 4 great songs. Not long after that the man him self Mario and his live band stepped to the stage with of course a massive reaction from his screaming female fans. After a few songs I have to admit the whole thing started to become very cliche, you know the box standard throw your hat into the crowd, take your t-shirt off, get 2 girls on stage. Now obviously for the ladies in question this must of been very frilling but for me it was a bit played out, I was expecting more of a show from Mario, I've seen his dance moves before and I thought I would see some of that live, but nope, none of that! Mario did say that each show will be different so hopefully tomorrow and Thursday will be better. Even though I didn't really enjoy he's stage presence I did like that way he sounded live and I also enjoyed his cover of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature". Maybe if the venue was bigger he could put on a better show. So overall I'd give him 5/10
Tracks he performed (in no particular order)
Just A Friend
Crying Out For Me
How Do I Breathe
I'll Make Love To You (Boyz II Men Cover)
Human Nature (Michael Jackson Cover)
How Could You
Let Me Love You
Hear the highlights on BBC Radio 1Xtra tonight from 7pm, check the pics out now!

112 Back For 2008
After all of the rumours regarding 112 splitting up, solo projects and other ventures, if reports are to be believed they have partnered up with Irv Gotti to form their own record label, appropriately named the 'One Twelve Music Group' under the Inc Records umbrella.
This will involve them discovering & signing artists, writers, producers etc
Reports also suggest a new album for 2008 in partnership with The Inc, which will mean a new fresh sound for 112! After putting out 3 classic albums with Bad Boy, a joint project between Bad Boy & Def Jam and a 5th album with Def Jam, this could be a return to form, opening up new opportunities for the group to work with different producers and artists from The Inc label....Can anyone say 112 feat Lloyd & Ashanti? or 112 feat Lil Wayne?
